What is PBIS?

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports

Because good grades and good behavior go hand-in-hand, District 153 continues to develop its PBIS Initiative as a companion to our academic programs and interventions.

PBIS is a coordinated effort to teach, model, and acknowledge expected behaviors. Each school has defined an age-appropriate set of expectations that is explained to students during the first days of each new school year. Staff model for students what good behavior looks like in different areas of the school such as the lunch room, bus, playground, hallways and restrooms.

And just like academics, each school has its own system of rewards to celebrate displays of expected behaviors by both individual students and entire classrooms.

Data collection is a key component to PBIS. Throughout the school year, we collect data on the numbers and types of behavior issues that arise. Staff meets regularly to review this data and plan lessons to re-teach behaviors where indicated.
